$18K in Recent Service and Upgrades
Car Cave sourced this Defender from the dry climate of Sicily. The Defender was manufactured June 21, 2000 in Solihull, UK then sold new in Italy on July 27, 2000, where it remained throughout its life. We were impressed with the condition, straight body, and low mileage (driven only approximately 3,700 miles per year!). A complete mechanical review was completed once it arrived at our shop in Aiken, SC. The Td5 engine runs smoothly and has the perfect balance of power and low-end torque. The D90 tracks well on the road thanks to a brand new set of Toyo Open Country AT tires. The turbo spools as it should, and the transmission shifts properly. This Defender is finished in the rare, one-year-only Oxford Blue (LRC602), with 16” 10-spoke Sawtooth alloy wheels.
What is the Td5, you ask? The Td5 engine was released by Land Rover in 1998 to meet stricter emissions standards. It was a ground-up redevelopment of Land Rover’s diesel engine, code-named Project Storm. The redesigned 2.5L (2498 cc) inline 5-cylinder Garrett turbocharged cast-iron diesel featured electronic injection. Still not enough power? Car Cave offers a full range of performance upgrades to make your Defender scream down the road.
This Defender is in great condition and the paint presents extremely well. Since acquiring it, Car Cave reupholstered all the seats and cubby box in custom brown leather, installed tan carpets with sound deadening material, and recovered the headliner. The color combination is striking in person. We also completed a full inspection and maintenance—because, as we like to say, “fresh off the boat” Defenders always need a bit of mechanical love and reconditioning. The D90 underwent a comprehensive inspection, servicing, and maintenance program at Car Cave USA. Initial work included a full intake inspection, test drive evaluation, and undercarriage cleaning to assess overall condition and driveability. Diagnostic efforts focused on verifying gauge functionality by removing the dash to inspect wiring connections, lubricating the front swivels, and treating a stuck turbo wastegate. Following inspection findings, a full maintenance service was completed, including transmission fluid and gasket replacement, front and rear differential fluid changes, installation of a new steering stabilizer and drop arm, and replacement of the third ball joint with updated hardware. Under-hood service addressed TD5-specific issues with replacement of the injector harness, valve cover gasket, sealing grommets, and a complete filter service including oil, fuel, rotary, and air filters. The ECU was cleaned and checked and fresh Rotella diesel oil was installed. Additional cosmetic and interior work included installing rear reflectors, dash trim components, Black metal wing top vents, and powder-coated exterior pieces. The turbo system received further attention with a deep cleaning due to a stuck wastegate. The vehicle was also fully detailed inside and out, including washing, polishing, and interior cleaning, leaving it fully serviced, sorted, and presentation-ready.
The interior was completely stripped down, thoroughly cleaned, and reupholstered. The front bucket seats, rear bench seats, and center cubby box are now finished in brown leather with custom stitching. The headliner was removed and recovered in tan, and the floors were fitted with tan bound-edge carpet for a refined look and better sound insulation.
