The CJ, short-hand for Civilian Jeep, had been in production since the end of WWII. By the eighties, AMC was looking to overhaul their 4-wheel-drive veteran for a new group of buyers. While not exact equals in the marketplace, Jeep and AMC’s rivals in Detroit had updated their offerings with the Blazer and Bronco, which found more footing in the civilized world. The first Jeep “Wrangler,” or YJ, was garnished in a bevvy of special trim packages that speak to the eighties’ party atmosphere — we’re looking at you, Coutach-esque Renegade! — and a continuous line up updates over the YJ’s lifespan helped to meet the public’s desire for a more refined Jeep.

To start, the chassis in the YJ was updated from the CJ, to give the vehicle a wider stance. The frame rails were pushed out, which widened the leaf springs’ grip on the solid front- and rear-axles. This, along with the addition of panhard bars for lateral stability, greatly improved the highway handling and drivability over the old CJ. This didn’t hurt the YJ’s offroad chops, and a few minutes with a ratchet to disconnect the swaybar, and it’d outflex the CJ easily. But what really shook up the scene was the now-iconic headlights.

Square ones.

The 7-inch round sealed beams that had been a part of the Jeep’s identity, surviving through their experimental years in the ‘50s and ‘60s, had been replaced to align the YJ with the upcoming XZ Cherokee. Along with the tamed suspension, the diehards derided the YJ for years as the lesser machine, but history has proven otherwise. While it may have been a knock on Jeep’s street cred, the reality was that these changes, overall, were vital in establishing the Wrangler as today’s leader in the 4x4 segment, and sales soared. Today, they’re still one of the best deals in the vintage 4x4 world, underappreciated by their original audience but beloved by those who grew up in the eighties and nineties.

This particular 1993 is a true beauty, originally sold in California before spending most of its life in Georgia. It was clearly a cherished machine, with the original interior and paint (the same Sand Beige Metallic used by the Jurassic Park film crew) in excellent condition. Unlike most YJs today, this thing is practically all-original, and is the analog solution to today’s digitized four-wheelers. You don’t roll down the power windows, you totally remove them from the half-doors. While this vehicle is electronically fuel-injected, so it starts easily and reliably in all kinds of weather, the manually-shifted AX-15 transmission and NP231 transfer case is a delight. And, above all else, this YJ benefits from its later production years with the venerable 4.0 straight-six engine under the hood, providing excellent torque and performance in modern traffic while still being well-supported.

The Sahara package also further tames this Wrangler, with full carpets and comfortable, and unique, forest green bucket seats up front with a simple bench in back. The dash has a full complement of analog gauges, and it has been updated with a CD player and newer speakers along with an underdash A/C system.

But why would you use that? This thing is begging to have its BesTop canvas roof pulled back, half-doors freed of their containment — it’s the perfect machine for cruising backroads out to the coast in, or heading out west to explore Moab. With an example this clean, you’ve either got the perfect foundation for your own vintage Jeep build or a loyal companion for years to come.

Bought in California and kept in Georgia, this southern-owned Wrangler spent no part of its life driving over salted roads. There is no corrosion hiding in the chassis. The low mileage reads on the exterior and the interior, and its clean history is backed up by the CarFax, which is available upon request.

This Jeep has not been heavily modified, and the lack of interference is evident in the driving experience. This Wrangler has not been “built” into something it was never meant to be, but remains the Wrangler as intended.
