Car Cave sourced this Defender from the dry climate of Sicily. The Defender was sold new in Italy on July 9, 1999, where it remained throughout its life. We were impressed with the original paint, straight body, and low mileage (driven only approximately 3,500 miles per year!). A complete mechanical review was completed once it arrived at our shop in Aiken, SC. The Td5 engine runs smoothly and has the perfect balance of power and low-end torque. The D90 tracks well on the road, the turbo spools as it should, and the transmission shifts properly. This Defender is finished in Coniston Green with a contrasting white roof, 5-spoke factory alloy wheels, and silver chequer plate—a classic color combination with an iconic contrast roof.

What is the Td5, you ask? The Td5 was released by Land Rover in 1998 to meet stricter emissions standards. It was a ground-up redevelopment of Land Rover’s diesel engine, code-named Project Storm. The freshly redesigned 2.5L (2498 cc) inline 5-cylinder Garrett turbocharged cast-iron diesel featured electronic injection. Still not enough power? This Defender arrived in great condition, and the original paint still presents well. Since acquiring it, Car Cave reupholstered all the seats and cubby box in custom perforated brown saddle leather, installed black carpets with sound deadening, and recovered the headliner. We also completed a full inspection and maintenance—because, as we like to say, “fresh off the boat” Defenders always need a bit of mechanical love and reconditioning. This D90 received extensive maintenance in addition to the upgraded interior. There is a $600 tire allowance with the purchase of this Defender, as the currently installed tires should be replaced. Work performed includes a new battery, flasher switch, HD steering rods, drop arm, greasing the front swivels, bleeding the clutch, cleaning the blower control unit contacts, coolant expansion tank, steering damper, alignment, and new front grille and headlamp finishers. The 235/85R16 BFG tires give the Defender the perfect stance on 16” 5-spoke alloy wheels, and with the $600 tire allowance, we encourage you to customize. Silver chequer plate is fitted on the wing tops and rockers for protection and improved aesthetics. The front end has been refreshed with a new grille, headlamp finishers, and halo LED headlamps—an excellent upgrade for improved lighting over factory units.

The interior was completely stripped down, thoroughly cleaned, and reupholstered. The front bucket seats, rear bench seats, and center cubby box are now finished in saddle brown leather with custom stitching and perforation. The headliner was removed and recovered in gray, and the floors were fitted with black bound-edge carpet for a refined look and better sound insulation.
