Patina, Lots of Patina
Complete Galvanized Frame Replacement
Professionally Rebuilt Engine and Transmission
This 1968 Land Rover Series IIA 88 is the hard-to-find pickup configuration with an easy to remove top and safari half doors. This is a very original example with the appearance of old age but major improvements hidden underneath decades of earned patina and character. Land Rovers are notorious for having chassis rust issues, and luckily this one benefits from having a complete galvanized chassis and floorpan replacement. The previous owner swapped that beautiful body over plus a mechanical refurbishment. This is a running, driving, and mechanically sorted Series IIA looking for a new field to go play in.
Power comes from the original petrol engine which was professionally rebuilt in 2025 by Ted Marsh. The gearbox was also professionally rebuilt in 2024 with a new clutch, hydraulics, master and slave cylinder. Brakes were gone through including a master cylinder, shoes, and wheel cylinders by the previous owner.
One of the standout features of this truck is its fully operational front winch and rear PTO. The front mounted Koenig winch is driven directly from the front crankshaft not from the rear of the gearbox as seen on some setups. At the rear is a belt-drive PTO with the desirable cast-iron drive housing, not the later aluminum version. The entire rear PTO assembly has been professionally rebuilt with new bearings, seals, and gaskets, and both systems are fully functional.
The interior feels, smells, and looks like an old Landy. Your backside will remain comfortable while green laning around the fields of Narnia thanks to new elephant hide grey seats. Gauges were all restored and rewired by the previous owner for proper operation. You'll remain cool as both doors are fitted with period correct fresh air vents, an old school dealer option rarely seen today. The Tex-Magna turn signal unit has been restored and is fully functional and the Smith’s round heater has been refreshed with a new Clayton core and motor. Surprisingly both wiper motors are functional and the keyed door locks are operational.
The Best 4x4 By Far truck rides on six factory 231601 steel wheels. All wheels were recently sand blasted and powder coated in the correct Limestone. New 245/75R16 Definity M/T tires were installed, giving it the correct stance, aggressive look, modern rubber without modernizing its appearance. The speedometer shows 4,470 miles, and the dual oil pressure and water temperature gauge is functional. A dual fuel filler is present, however, it is not currently connected to a secondary fuel tank, as a previous owner never completed that portion of the installation.
Car Cave USA performed a comprehensive mechanical refresh. The steering system was fully serviced, including removal, inspection, and rebuild of the steering gearbox, installation of a heavy-duty steering rod set, replacement tie rod end, and proper alignment with toe set and steering wheel centered. Suspension work included replacement of leaf spring and chassis bushings, new shackle and spring bolts, new U-bolts, and the installation of new heavy-duty shocks at all four corners paired properly to the parabolic springs, significantly improving ride quality and control. The axles and driveline were serviced with proper shimming of the front axle swivels, replacement of Railko swivel pin bushings, new front and rear pinion seals, replacement U-joints, and installation of prop shaft hardware kit. The cooling system was serviced with radiator removal, professional repair, reinstallation, and fresh coolant. Additional work included exhaust hanger repair, idle adjustment, and general inspection throughout.
This Series IIA is exactly what it appears to be: a genuine, mechanically sorted, unrestored Land Rover that has not been overdone or sanitized. The galvanized frame is a must-have on an old crusty Landy but the key to this build was what was preserved, not what was replaced. It is equally at home as a weekend driver, property truck, trail companion, or a driving display piece for whatever floats your boat.
