The Piaggio Ape has been in continual production since 1948 as a three-wheeled light commercial vehicle. The Piaggio Group is an Italian manufacturer who produces a variety of two-wheel offerings including Piaggio, Vespa, Aprillia, Moto Guzzi, and Derbi. Ape’s are popular in various configurations including vans, rickshaws, and pickups while offering admirable cargo capacity and exceptional fuel economy. Now how did Car Cave happen to get an Ape? Well, we just happened to be in Rome and had a couple hours to burn in-between meetings. Like any good crew twiddling their thumbs, we took to the internet to look for cars because the Colosseum will be there next year! The seller lived about 45 minutes from our Villa and was available to show the Ape. So we jammed down south in a rented Fiat Abarth and took the Piaggio for a test run. It was love at first sight, so we shook hands, broke some bread, and drank some vino.

This Ape retains its original unmolested vintage charm with an unmistakable three-wheeled silhouette and Piaggio’s unique design cues. It features a truck bed that is perfect for small deliveries, farm tasks, mobile vending, or light cargo hauling. The efficient 49cc 2-stroke engine, paired with a Dellorto SHBC 18/16 carburetor, delivers just enough power to tackle local errands while offering unheard of fuel economy.
