Car Cave purchased this left-hand-drive extended cab Hilux from a Toyota enthusiast in Southern France, just a short drive from the Spanish border. It’s a great dry-climate truck, finished in the original Toyota Stellar Blue Pearl (Color Code 8L7) with a two-tone patterned interior. It currently sits with a perfect stance, thanks to the 31x10.50x15 BFG All-Terrain tires wrapped around high-end Fittipaldi 5-spoke 15” alloy wheels. We’ve logged about 1,000 miles on this truck since it arrived stateside and—as usual—it never let us down. Car Cave performed a full mechanical inspection to ensure it’s ready for its next adventure. Clean, left-hand-drive Hilux trucks are tough to find worldwide, as they’re typically worked hard in harsh conditions.

Under the hood is the upgraded 2L-TE(II) turbo diesel engine, an improved version of Toyota’s proven 2L-TE. While it shares the same dimensions as its predecessor, the 2L-TE(II) features a redesigned cylinder head that resolves a common issue in earlier versions—cracking under high temperatures. Rest easy knowing this Hilux can take a beating and keep going strong.

The 2L-TE(II) also boasts a slightly higher compression ratio of 21.0:1, delivering improved performance with 96 horsepower at 3,800 rpm and up to 177 lb-ft of torque at 2,400 rpm. It’s the perfect blend of fuel economy, longevity, and torque for both on-road cruising and off-road trail work. Power is sent through a W56 5-speed manual transmission, paired with a hi-low transfer case and a 7.5” 4.700:1 4-pinion rear axle.

The Hilux was designed by Toyota to be simple and nearly indestructible—often joked about as a truck that could survive a nuclear blast after being thrown off a cliff. A few factory options include power brakes, power steering, crank windows, headache rack, rear tow hitch, dual batteries, rear defrost, and several skid plates underneath. Additional upgrades include tinted windows, a bedliner, and a Kenwood DMX908S double-DIN touchscreen radio with backup camera, plus USB and USB-C charging ports.

Recent maintenance includes a timing belt service, air filter, fuel filter, brake proportioning valve, bleeding of the brakes, and oil change—performed by the previous owner with receipts to verify. Car Cave completed further service, including replacing the heater control assembly, CV boot clamp, sway bar links, and reverse lamp switch. We also replaced the driver’s side outer tie rod and checked the front alignment. A damaged differential fill plug was extracted and replaced. Stateside, we added window tint and installed the Kenwood head unit with a backup camera.
