Car Cave sourced this 105 out of the Middle East. It is a GCC (Gulf Corporation Council) model manufactured in Japan. The GCC required certain features due to the regional laws and climate conditions, including a mandatory fire extinguisher which is still in the vehicle. A mechanical review was completed in the UAE by a specialty shop and suspension upgrades were performed by Dobinsons UAE. A lengthy list of mechanical items were addressed and completely documented. The 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ105 bridges the mechanical toughness of the 80 Series with the refinement of the 100. Equipped with Toyota’s legendary 1HZ naturally aspirated diesel engine, this Land Cruiser embodies reliability and mechanical simplicity. Limited electronics, no complexity, just rock-solid reliable Toyota engineering.
Paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox and part-time four-wheel drive, the HZJ105 is built for global travel, backcountry exploration, and everyday use. The suspension has been upgraded with a Dobinsons system, including lift springs, shocks, and a steering damper for improved ride quality and handling both on- and off-road.
The exterior is finished in full repainted Blue Steel Metallic accented all around by a lower two-tone gray paint and classic side graphics. Originally, green, it the repaint involved a full tear-down, with the only remaining green we can see underneath the vehicle. Immediately, Toyota fanboys will notice the rear ambulance doors (SOB – swing open back) and rear tire carrier not found on the US spec 100 Series. Looking at this unicorn from 20’ away you immediately notice the improved look that is the result of a bit of extra height. The oversize BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO3 fit great in the wheel wells without being too much and the 17” chrome alloy Method wheels add a bit of sex appeal. The stance is near perfect, the undercarriage extraordinarily clean, and the overall condition of the body reflects its desert dwelling life.
Inside, the cabin is the original interior with patterned gray cloth upholstery and blue accents. A few GCC feature can be found inside including a center console cooler box, fire extinguisher, inward facing rear bench seats in the cargo area, no sunroof (slick roof), dual fuel tank switch, and a clutch pedal with a 5-speed. Features include air conditioning, manual cloth seats, power windows, power mirrors, central locking, power steering, and power disc brakes. The overall presentation remains faithful to Toyota’s utilitarian ethos — comfortable, simple, and built to last. Car Cave did not recondition the interior, and the door cards show excessive wear.
