This 1982 Toyota Pickup Deluxe Long Bed, finished in original Medium Blue (Paint Code 857), was manufactured at the Tahara Hino Motors, Ltd plant in Japan (Assembly Code A51). Purchased new by David G. on March 29, 1982, from Irvin Datsun and Toyota in Irvine, CA, it came with a sticker price of $9,491.75. David owned this truck for over 42 years, taking it on countless adventures from Calfornia to Alaska all the way down to South Carolina. If trucks could talk, this one would have some epic stories to share. Luckily, the previous owner shared a few with us. With just 13.9 miles on the odometer at the time of purchase, David meticulously kept extensive records, including the original manuals, window sticker, and well-documented service history. We even have a photo of this truck conquering the California dunes back in the ‘80s. Unremarkably (it’s a Toyota), it never left David stranded!

Ready to Drive
Powering this truck is the original 22R 2.4L (2366cc or 144 cubic inch) 4-cylinder engine, paired with the L52 5-speed manual transmission. David’s meticulous maintenance—rooted in his aviation background in the military and beyond—ensured the engine runs smoothly. The only noticeable update under the hood is a secondary fuel pump, installed as a backup for desert and backwoods adventures. This 4WD model includes factory options like California Emissions, AM/FM Multiplex Radio, rear sliding and vent windows, chrome step bumper, and deluxe chrome mirrors. Standard features include manual front hubs, skid plates, front tow hook, heavy-duty off-road suspension, urethane rear fender flares, front and rear mudguards, power-boosted flow-thru ventilation, a one-touch tailgate release, and a spacious 7-foot cargo bed.
Over the years, a few aftermarket accessories were added, such as Smittybilt front and rear bumpers. The rear bumper includes a 2” receiver and trailer wiring harness. A roll bar—originally for a short-bed model—was modified to fit this truck, as evidenced by old photos and mounting plates in the bed. Remarkably, David mentioned the rear brake shoes are original, which speaks volumes about his intimate knowledge of this truck.
The axle code G082 reveals an 8.0” rear end with a 4.111:1 gear ratio and 2-pinion setup. The bed, despite years of service, remains in great shape, with only minimal rust bubbles appearing in a few areas. Anchors for tie-downs and plates from the previous roll bar and lights are still present.
The original wheels have been replaced with white 15” wagon wheels wrapped in 235/75R15 Michelin Defender LTX M/S tires. The original spare still resides under the truck bed.
Inside, the blue cloth seats (Trim Code LU82) and vinyl floors show signs of use but remain in good condition. The dashboard features a factory AM/FM radio and heat controls. For air conditioning, you’ll need to rely on the smoker’s windows for a breeze. Original manuals, including the 1982 Toyota Owner’s Manual and California Owner’s Guide, as well as the original window sticker, accompany the truck.
Recent Service:
Car Cave USA recently serviced the truck. Noticing the brakes were soft, we replaced the master cylinder and bled the system. We also identified a very slight radiator leak but chose to include a replacement radiator with the sale, leaving the choice to the next owner. We prioritized preserving the truck’s aesthetics and history while ensuring it’s ready for more adventures.
